Paralyzed teen walks down aisle at sister's wedding

Mackenzie Gorden, paralyzed in a car accident, walks down the aisle at her sister's wedding. (Trending Now)

Sixteen months ago a car accident forever changed Mackenzie Gorden's life. Doctors told her parents their 18-year-old daughter would never walk again. But Mackenzie was determined to prove them wrong, especially since she was asked to be the maid of honor at her sister Brittany's wedding. Her story is featured in a special report for the Denver Post: "Stepping Toward Hope: My Sister's Wedding."
The Lake City, Iowa, teen worked for months at a groundbreaking paralysis-recovery training center in Colorado. Never giving up, the courageous high school senior kept working toward her goal of walking down the aisle. And on the day of her sister's wedding, Mackenzie wheeled up to the ceremony and did the impossible. With the help of her brother on one side and the best man on the other, she walked as best as she could down the aisle to join the bridesmaids at the altar.
Mackenzie's mother, Karen Gorden, said she had feared her daughter might never walk down the aisle on the day of her own wedding, but now that fear will never become a reality.
Mackenzie's remarkable story reminded us of Garrett Bazany from Grand Haven, Michigan. In May, three years after he was paralyzed from a trampoline accident, he walked across the stage to accept his high school diploma.

Why Being Dead Is Really Good for a Celeb’s Bank Account?

.

Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor — they're all just as rich, if not richer, in death as they were in life. How come?

They’re not only wealthier in death; they’re also shinier than some of the biggest living names out there right now. Per Forbes, Jackson made $160 million over the past year, topping the very alive Madonna, who made about $125 million.
So why is The Gloved One able to make it rain all the way from Heaven?
Several reasons. First, he was hugely influential in life, just like Bettie Page or Jenni Rivera or Presley or Taylor or Bob Marley. So it’s only natural that folks would still want to spend money on a dead star’s movies or music.
"These are people who had dramatic impact on our lives and culture," says Mark Roesler, CEO of CMG Worldwide, which manages the intellectual property of celebrities both dead and alive. "Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer of all time.
.
Rivera (Getty)
And if you look at [the late] Jenni Rivera or Bettie Page, both of which are clients, you see people who also had dramatic impact on our culture. Bettie, as Hugh Hefner once pointed out, started the sexual revolution in our country, and she was someone at the forefront of sexuality and pushing the boundaries. She is someone that people still want relate to — almost like James Dean, a rebel in her own way."
While a good amount of Jackson's posthumous income is from his music catalog and video sales, the biggest chunk comes from the cash-generating licensing deal with Cirque du Soleil. The touring show "Immortal" has grossed more than $300 million since opening a year ago, while the Las Vegas-based "One" has been printing money at the Mandalay Bay since the curtain went up in May.
Presley, likewise, owes a chunk of his income to continuing music sales and the enduring tourist popularity of Graceland (strangely enough, Cirque's Elvis-themed Viva Preseley was never the cash cow that the troupe's Beatles or Jackson shows have been).
The Bob Marley name helps sell everything from speakers, to tote bags to, yes, coffee (apparently lots of fans crave a mug of Buffalo Soldier brew). The newcomer on the list, Rivera has doubled her career album sales since her death in a plane crash last December; her autobiography, released in July has sold 400,000 copies.
The other reason why stars like Jackson keep getting paid after death is a bit...delicate. Put it this way: Sure, the guy can no longer earn money with new recordings or concerts or personal appearances. But he also can’t blow any of that money on, say, Neverland or pet monkeys or bronze statues of Peter Pan or expensive court cases involving young boys. (According to testimony at the recent wrongful death trial, Jackson was in debt for a whopping $400 million-$500 million at the time of his 2009 death; the trustees of his estate have done a remarkable job turning that around.)
Plus, when a star is dead, he or she doesn’t run the risk of creating a fresh scandal that can ruin a profitable image.
"With Michael Jackson, fans can just look at his legacy that he left behind, the impact he had, and there is no new controversy that is going to surface," Roesler explains.
Lastly, a smart company like CMG can often rebrand a celebrity once he or she has passed away, essentially downplaying the less desirable parts of a celebrity’s image in favor of aspects that can bring in more money in licensing deals.
"Back in the early '80s, when were representing the Presley estate, we wanted to focus only on the early Elvis," Roesler says. As a result, memories of the older, heavier Elvis faded, and we were left only with the skinnier, cuter rockabilly boy who, just in the last 12 months, earned a whopping $55 million.

Kim Kardashian's Engagement Rings From Kanye West, Kris Humphries Compared!

Kim Kardashian's Engagement Rings From Kanye West, Kris Humphries Compared! .

She knows how to flaunt it! Kanye West put a ring on it and proposed to girlfriend Kim Kardashian on her 33rd birthday Monday, Oct. 21. Surprisingly (or not), Kardashian's new bling appears to be similar in style to her old one from ex-husband Kris Humphries.
The reality star's hairstylist, Clyde Haygood, shared a picture of Kardashian flashing her new bling on Instagram Monday. According to TMZ, the 36-year-old rapper proposed to the mother of his 4-month-old daughter, North, with a 15-carat diamond ring. A Lorraine Schwartz rep confirms to Us Weekly that the ring is a D flawless cushion cut and a perfect diamond. West and Schwartz worked together and he had a vision on how the ring should look.

Kardashian posted a close-up photo of her ring on Instagram on Tuesday with the stadium screen in the background. She simply captioned the photo, "YES!!!"
Humphries, whom Kardashian filed for divorce from after 72 days of marriage in October 2011, proposed with a 16.21-carat center diamond and two 1.8-carat side diamonds from Lorraine Schwartz. (Kardashian, not Humphries, initially paid for the ring.) The ring's initial reported worth was $2 million, but sold for a total of $749,000 at a Christie's auction in New York City on Oct. 15. A portion of the proceeds from the sale was going to charity.

Though the rings may be similar, the proposals were very different. West popped the question in front of Kardashian's family and friends at AT&T Park in San Francisco by projecting "pleeease marry meee!!!" on the stadium screen. NBA player Humphries proposed in May 2011 in Kardashian's bedroom with candles and rose petals spelling out, "Will you marry me?" His proposal aired on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

And don't expect the weddings to be similar either. Kardashian told England's Tatler magazine in November 2012 that her next wedding won't be as big as it was with Humphries. "It had always been my dream to have a big wedding, and when people said that I'd made it over the top for the show, that was just me: I am over the top," she said. "But the next time, I want to do it on an island with just my friends and family and that's it."

Rihanna Kicked Out of Abu Dhabi Mosque, Doesn’t Seem to Care

Rihanna — who isn't known for being overly considerate of others (including her own fans) — pushed the boundaries again. This time, however, authorities pushed back.
The pop princess was asked to leave Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque complex on Friday when she attempted to pose for an unauthorized photo shoot at the place of worship.

Posing in a black jumpsuit with a wrap that covered her head, the star still managed to look rather sultry as she stared into the camera, caressed her hips, and even rolled around on the floor a little. She completed her look with a giant gold necklace and bright red lips that were positioned in a bedroom pout.
Staff reportedly spotted her and requested that she leave the compound because her actions were considered to not be in line with the "sanctity" of the site. And while RiRi wasted no time tossing up the pics on Instagram, the mosque publicly addressed the situation as well, releasing a statement to explain its position — not that it needed much explanation.

"In the event of behavior that violates the moral codes of access to the mosque, or other visit regulations — such as taking inappropriate pictures, posing in ways that are improper in the context of sacred place, talking loudly, or eating — the violators are directed in a polite manner that reflects the civilizational and tolerant attributes of Islam."
According to the authorities, Rihanna showed up "for a private visit to the mosque, at a gate that is not reserved for visitors, without prior coordination with the Centre’s management and without identifying herself." It does concede, however, that the 25-year-old star did leave "without entering the mosque, after being asked to do so." So … that's good at least.
Still, the tide may be turning against the self-described bad girl, as even fans seem to be getting fed up with her diva behavior. Just two days after the mosque incident, Rihanna's performance in Johannesburg, South Africa, proved to be pretty disastrous.

The city's biggest newspaper, The Star, ran an article on its front page called Ri-Ri Rip-Off slamming the singer for her "obvious" lip-synching and calling the show "below par."
One fan explained, "I think she was actually lip-synching because, at some points, the words of the song were happening but she wasn’t singing along. I don’t know if she was doing it for the whole show." According to another, she wasn't. "You knew she was singing because she wasn’t always on key," Nicole Contini quipped.
And this is hardly the first time the singer has taken heat for a lackluster show. For the last year, she has been nearly chronically late to her own concerts and has yet to apologize once.
Which makes it pretty much par for the course that she has yet to respond to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque's statement or even take the photos down. Back in July, we asked when fans would say enough is enough. Soon, we may get our answer.

[Photo] Myla Sinanaj Finishes Surgery To Look Like Kim Kardashian, Plans Sex Tape With Ray J

Say what you want about Myla Sinanaj but ain’t no shame in this fame whores game. The only thing stronger than her obsession for the spotlight is her obsession with Kim
Kardashian. It started out innocently enough with her dating Kim’s ex–husband Kris Humphries but that was girlfriend just getting started.
Since then she has admitted to crushing on Kim’s sex tape partner Ray-J, released a single like Kim which was titled I’m No Angel and was in part about you guessed it Kim, has expressed her desire to work in the television industry (again like Kim), and has even gone so far as to star in her own sex tape Myla Sinanaj—The Anti Kim XXX. Seriously, if she could skin Kim and wear her I think she would.
Since that is out of the question Myla has done the next best thing by going under the knife to look like Kim spending upwards of $30,000 for a boob job, liposuction, and lip injections. The fact that she would even admit that she is trying to morph into Kim leads me to the conclusion
that she is either really dumb or really honest (probably both). She claims it is not Kim she is obsessed with but rather Kim’s body.
In an interview last month with Michael Musto she said it was Kim’s body she “emulates” not Kim herself. To further prove that she isn’t a fan of Kim she went on to call Kimmy cakes out on her own obvious plastic surgery that she
continues to deny, a simple fact that can be confirmed with a simple Google search of Kim before and after. Her ass, nose, and hairline – practically everything was different.
She also confirmed (what anyone with any knowledge of the law already knows) that there is no such thing as a “leaked” sex tape since legally both parties have to give permission so
we can finally put that myth to rest. So congratulations Myla you are doing a great job following in the misguided footsteps of your inspiration Kim, but there is something you
have that she doesn’t – gumption. At least you can admit who you really are and how you got where you. Although I admire your attempt at honesty my professional (and by professional I mean completely unprofessional) opinion is that your desire to become someone else – let alone Kim- speaks to a bigger problem.

Iron Man Armor For US Soldiers, Plans To Make Them Stronger

According to the reports, the Armor will make US Soldiers stronger, giving them superhuman strength, fit to carry heavy loads and also survive battles on war grounds.
US Army researchers are working on building hi-tech body armor that would give soldiers “superhuman strength” in a real-life version of the suit featured in “Iron Man” films. The blueprint for the “revolutionary” Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS) would include an exoskeleton to allow a soldier to carry heavy equipment, built-in computing power, beefed up protection to stop bullets and a system to monitor vital signs, officials said.

“Some of the potential technologies planned for TALOS research and development include advanced armor, situational awareness, command and control computers, power management systems, and enhanced mobility exoskeletons,” according to a US Army statement issued last month. US Special Operations Command, which oversees elite Navy SEAL and Army Ranger commandos, put out the call last month for research papers on potential technologies that a “smart” combat suit could incorporate. The request for “white papers” will extend through September 2014, and then commanders and defense officials will weigh how to proceed while taking into account growing pressures on the Pentagon budget, said spokesman Roger Teel of the Army’s Research, Development and Engineering Command, or RDECOM .

Cheryl Cole 'Sacks Will.i.am As Manager and Hires One Direction Team To Relaunch Pop Career?'

Cheryl Cole has reportedly sacked her BFF Will.i.am as her manager (WENN)

Cheryl Cole is apparently taking no hostages when it comes to relaunching her fledgling pop career with sources claiming the 'Call My Name' singer has sacked her best friend Will.i.am as her manager and hired the team responsible for One Direction in a bid to save her singing career.
The 30-year-old was forced to put her career on hold earlier this year after reuniting with her Girls Aloud bandmates for their 10th anniversary tour before announcing their official split in March, putting an indefinite end to promotion for her last album 'A Million Lights.'

After months away from the music scene, it looks as though Cheryl is ready to come back all guns blazing with The Sun reporting that the Geordie star has sacked her manager and BFF Will.i.am whom she hired to reignite her career in 2011.
“Cheryl has had enough time to get over all the big dramas in her life over the past few years. The malaria episode, the humiliating experience on 'X Factor USA' and her marriage problems left her lost for a while,” a source explained to the publication.
“But she has really got the fire back in her belly and wants to throw herself into her career. The time is right.”
A rep has confirmed to EntertainmentWise that Cheryl is now under Modest! Management which looks after a host of former X Factor stars such as One Direction, JLS, Little Mix and Olly Murs, however, they would not comment on the reports of her allegedly sacking Will.i.am.
Meanwhile, it was recently claimed that Cheryl is teaming up with her former Girls Aloud bandmate Nicola Roberts on new music, for Cheryl's new album which has reportedly been pencilled in for next year.
"This seemed like the perfect opportunity to keep some of the Girls Aloud spirit alive. They’ll get to hang out together and make music – their two favourite things to do," the insider revealed to The Mirror.

Sprite - the ultimate hangover cure?

The answer to a boozy night and drinking a few alcoholic beverages too many could be another drink that's generally not considered very good for you.

Scientists have concluded that Sprite is the best cure for a hangover - beating competition from herbal teas, coffee and other fizzy drinks.

The reason we get hungover is because alcohol does some pretty horrible things to our body. It's dehydrating and so the body takes water from the brain in order for the other organs to function - which is why you're often groggy and a bit slow after a night on the sauce.

And that's also a key reason for that pounding headache you may recognise, as the brain decreases in size (it's usually made of 75 per cent water) and pulls on the membranes that connect it to the skull.

As well as dehydrating you, alcohol also stops your body making a key hormone called vasopressin. Without this, the kidneys send water straight to the bladder, rather than reabsorbing some into the body - so you urinate more, making you even more thirsty and dehydrated as you lose electrolytes, sodium and potassium. Low levels of these cause nausea and pain.

So far so miserable. But where does Sprite come into this?

Alcohol contains ethanol, which is a poison and the body needs to break it down and expel it.

The liver breaks down ethanol into acetaldehyde using an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). It then breaks that down into acetate using aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH).

The quicker the body manages to break down the acetaldehyde, the faster you'll feel better, as it's responsible for some typical hangover symptoms including feeling and being sick and a headache.

Researchers in China found that Sprite helped to speed up the work of the enzymes, in breaking down the acetaldehyde. And unexpectedly, they also discovered that some herbal teas actually prolonged it, thereby lengthening the amount of time you feel awful.

So while we wouldn't usually condone glugging down too much sugary pop, if you've had a heavy night, it might be the lesser liquid evil.

Eminem's Daughter Hailie Scott Wins Homecoming Queen

Eminem's daughter Hailie crowned Homecoming queen

Eminem's daughter is all grown up! Hailie Scott, 17, was named Homecoming Queen at her high school in Michigan on Friday, Oct. 4, and her famous dad was reportedly in attendance to watch her be crowned.
According to local newspaper Macomb Daily, Hailie, a senior, was voted Homecoming Queen alongside Homecoming King Tyler Knepp at Chippewa Valley High School. "Hailie came out with her mother Kim [Scott] when she was introduced with all the other kids but her father watched from inside the school because he didn't want to cause a scene -- he wanted Hailie to have her own moment," one parent told The Macomb Daily about the event.

The Detroit native rapper, 40, reportedly watched the homecoming football game out of public view, from inside one on of the high school classrooms. "He opened the door and looked out like - 'That's my daughter!' He just looked like a proud father," the parent said.

Hailie is Eminem's only biological child with ex-wife Kimberly Scott. The high school sweethearts married in 1999, divorced in 2001, remarried in 2006 and divorced again that same year. The "Berzerk" rapper also adopted Scott's daughter Whitney from a previous relationship, and Scott's sister's daughter Alaina.

In a screengrab photo circulating online from a local TV report on Chippewa Valley High School's homecoming, Hailie is seen wearing a crown and holding a bouqet of roses. The blonde beauty has a huge smile on her face while posing next to the Homecoming King.

Parents of students who are friends with Hailie told Macomb Daily that Eminem's daughter is smart, athletic and caring. "I think all of the kids in the district have shown respect to their family and just let her live a normal life here out of the spotlight," one parents explained. "I think that speaks very highly of the Chippewa Valley community to not try to take advantage of their fame."

Brandi Cyrus Chimes in on Sister Miley Cyrus' MTV Documentary

Miley Cyrus and Brandi Cyrus on September 6, 2012Miley Cyrus's new documentary, "Miley: The Movement," exposed the world to a whole new side of the pop star during the lead-up to her play for pop culture world domination this fall. In the doc, which premiered Wednesday night on MTV, Miley gave fans a peek behind the scenes of her publicity machine.
So, who better to get their take on the doc than one of Miley's own sisters? "Omg! Insider" sat down with the star's half-sister, Brandi Cyrus, in Nashville, Tennessee, to watch the doc and get her take on her sister's antics.
"[I] hope people can look at [the MTV Video Music Awards performance] and look past the crazy wardrobe and the silly hot dog guns and the teddy bear and latex … It's cool to see how strategic all of it is and how much she's involved," Brandi told "omg! Insider." "I think she did exactly what she set out to do."

"The VMAs have always been a moment where each celebrity tries to outdo the other in making the biggest moment," she continued. "Britney clearly did that with Madonna when I was a teenager and it was such an iconic moment and that's exactly what Miley did. And afterwards, yeah, she got a lot of negativity and everything, but even that negativity made her succeed. She was the most talked-about thing for the entire night. There was a reason she made it so outrageous. She wanted it to be the most talked about thing, and it was."
According to Brandi, the strategy discussed in the documentary is very real. "A lot of artists let their manager and their team do most of the work … but Miley wants to be involved in those decisions," she said. "She does like to take risks and she does like to push the envelope but … I think to see her speaking clearly, [you can tell] she's not high, she's not doing drugs, she's not acting crazy. I think [people should] see her as not only an artist but as a business woman, because that's what she is. She's building a business."

As for what keeps Miley grounded while standing so strongly in the spotlight? Brandi says it can all be attributed to their strong family bond.
"I think she handles things a lot better than a lot of other people in her position and I think a big reason she does handle it so well is because she does have the support of the family," Brandi noted. "It's sad because I feel like a lot of artists — especially younger artists — are thrown out on to the road and stuff without any parents, without any family; they just send them off with managers and stuff, you know? But my mom is Miley's manager and my mom is with her every step of the way. I think that's so important and I think that's one of the reasons Miley does handle it so well. She knows all she has to do is pick up the phone and call one of us and we're right there."
Noteworthy, however, is the fact that Miley and Brandi's father, Billy Ray Cyrus, does not appear at all in the doc.

Brandi also described the meaning behind the name of the new doc. "She wanted to call it 'The Movement' because she feels like it's not just a transition, it's a movement. Because it's not just she's just changing … it's like she's changing the music industry with her new look. And she likes the word 'movement' because it's like a bigger thing. You know, you say 'transition'; it's something else that everyone goes through … everyone goes through a transition of growing up. But for her, this is a movement of changing pop music."
On Thursday, MTV announced that they were preparing a new 90-minute Deluxe Edition of "Miley: The Movement" with all new and extended scenes, to air this Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Photos: Female Singer Maheeda’s luxurious lifestyle in Holland With Her Husband.

 Maheeda & Husband
Caroline Sam popularly known as Maheeda is known for her daring lifestyle her recent confessing about her bad deeds back in the day some how overshadowed her passion in music, love and family. Her first single “Oko Yanpia” blew away charts and drew attention to her with many calling her “goddess of X”.
She returned to the music scene with “Superman (Loke Loke) this year after taking time to be a wife and mother. The actress and model who is a celeb in Holland and Nigeria was recently interviewed by a dutch magazine where she opened her home to them and they spent a day the “oko yanpia” crooner.
Maheeda keeps her family away from the press but she decided to show off her husband, her beautiful home, their two private aircrafts and also her workout session at the gym.
Excerpts from the interview in Dutch translated to English.
How do you combine your work with been a wife and mother?
It wasn’t easy at first, i had to take time off work to be able to adjust but i still did photoshoot for my modelling jobs anywhere in Holland and other part of Europe, thanks to my husband who allows me to use one of his aircraft to travel. Which allows me to be back home in time if need to get back home that same day.
(cuts in)
Your husband has a private plane?
He has two actually, thank God for his grace.
What does he do?
Laughs… you’re a journalist right? You should find that out yourself, he won’t like that but i can tell you my husband has three companies – One in Holland and two in Nigeria.
Let’s get back to you, what have you been upto lately?
Like i said earlier, I’m currently the face of a lingerie line, we just finished shooting the advert clip and the photo session; so when it comes out you’ll see it. And for a body cream too, the campaign will start soon you’d also see the advert everywhere when it comes out.
What about your music career? Are you done with music?
Nope, I just came back from Nigeria, where i met with my management team… I’ve recorded a lot of songs and we currently working on dropping my album “Imagination” sometime next year and i also released my new single “Superman (L’oke L’oke)” which is doing well online and on radio airplays back at home. A new sound dropping soon (Chuckles).
New sound? What influences or inspires your songs
Everything around me inspires my music, people, love, fashion, name it – my latest single superman, my husband inspired that, its a mixture of afropop which is the thing in Nigeria and house music with is the thing here. We had to find a way to blend the two genres together. When my “Imagination” project comes out you’ll hear the new sound i’ve been working on.
Since you trying to bring afropop into Holland any collaboration with a Dutch artist or a known artiste in Europe?
Well, I’m working with my team to get my self well established here, so that the dutch people can know i’m not just another pretty face. I don’t wanna spill the bean yet. As soon as it is sealed you guys will be the first to know.
Can you give us a tour of your home before your P.A comes knocking for the rest of your schedule.
laughs… My Pleasure.

INNOCENT CHUKWUMA - Publicizing human rights abuses by Nigerian police.

As leader of the CLO (Civil Liberties Organisation), Innocent pioneered a program to publicize human rights abuses committed by the Nigerian police forces. His research exposed an institutionalized culture of brutality and torture in Nigeria’s criminal justice system, which led to the country’s first-ever human rights training workshop aimed at preventing police misconduct. In 1996, Innocent successfully lobbied the United Nations Commission on Human Rights to pass a resolution condemning Nigeria’s human rights record. The move enraged Nigerian authorities, and Innocent began to receive death threats. Undeterred, Innocent dedicated himself to reforming Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies. He founded the Center for Law Enforcement Education (CLEEN), an organization that works both to change police attitudes toward the public and to educate poor Nigerians about their civil rights and the legal system. In addition to his criminal justice work, he was one of the founders of United Action for Democracy, Nigeria’s principal pro-democracy political party. In 1997, Innocent successfully lobbied the United Nations to appoint a special human rights investigator for Nigeria. Today, he continues to be an outspoken critic of political corruption and injustice at home and abroad.
