Bill Gates admits Control-Alt-Delete was a mistake, blames IBM

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has finally admitted that forcing users to press the Control-Alt-Delete key combination to log into a PC was a mistake. In an interview at a Harvard fundraising campaign, Gates discusses his early days building Microsoft and the all-important Control-Alt-Delete decision. If you've used an old version of the software or use Windows at work then you will have experienced the odd requirement. Gates expains the key combination is designed to prevent other apps from faking the login prompt and stealing a password.

"It was a mistake," Gates admits to an audience left laughing at his honesty. "We could have had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn't wanna give us our single button." David Bradley, an engineer who worked on the original IBM PC, invented the combination which was originally designed to reboot a PC. "I may have invented it, but Bill made it famous," Bradley said in an interview previously, leaving Bill Gates looking rather awkward. To this day the combination still exists in Windows 8, allowing users to lock a machine or access the task manager. While Windows 8 defaults to a new login screen, it's still possible to use the traditional Control-Alt-Delete requirement and a number of businesses running on Windows XP and Windows 7 will still use it every day.

Gates has admitted other mistakes too

Control-Alt-Delete isn't the only recent mistake admission by Bill Gates. Earlier this year the Microsoft chairman admitted that the software maker didn't nail the mobile market when it had the opportunity. "We didn't miss cellphones, but the way that we went about it didn't allow us to get the leadership," said Gates at the time, before admitting the strategy was "clearly a mistake." Current CEO Steve Ballmer, who plans to retire shortly, has also been admitting his mistakes recently. "I regret there was a period in the early 2000s when we were so focused on what we had to do around Windows [Vista] that we weren't able to redeploy talent to the new device called the phone," explained Ballmer at a recent Microsoft financial analysts meeting. Microsoft is now searching for a new CEO who can help with the company's fresh devices and services plan to regain some mobile market share and move away from its PC and Control-Alt-Delete legacies.

Lindsay Lohan's Mum, Dina Lohan Charged With Drunken Driving

 
While Lindsay Lohan works to keep her nose clean after her most recent stint in rehab, her mother has found herself in hot water.
The actress's 50-year-old mother, Dina Lohan, was arrested on charges of drunk driving on Long Island, New York, on Thursday night.
The stage mom was pulled over at 11 p.m. for allegedly speeding in a white BMW on the Northern State Parkway. Police say Dina was driving 77 mph in a 55 mph zone, and she was "found to be intoxicated" during the routine stop.
Dina, who has four children, was arrested and charged with DWI and Aggravated DWI after a breath test found her blood alcohol concentration to be .20 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit. She was also given a speeding ticket.
At the Farmington Police Station, Dina claimed she was injured during the arrest. An ambulance was called, and she was evaluated. According to police, no injuries were found and she then recanted her allegation.
She was released to a sober third party and is scheduled to appear in Nassau County District Court on September 24.
Dina's attorney, Mark Jay Heller, issued the following statement about his client to "omg! Insider": "Dina Lohan is a good person. Her life has been dedicated to her four children. She has worked hard her entire life and she has been 'Parent Trapped' with the entire world watching her in a fishbowl with murky water due to no fault of her own. She appreciates the grave seriousness of this matter and is mindful that the Nassau County District Attorney considers these types of cases a top priority. But as an attorney with 45 years of experience, I am confident that as a first time offender, with absolutely no prior record, that the Judicial System will treat Dina Lohan with even-handed fairness."
Throughout Lindsay's ongoing personal problems, which include multiple arrests, probation violations, and six stints in rehab, Dina has been a controversial figure. Initially, it was because she was seen out with her daughter at nightclubs, both when Lindsay was underage and later when she was in and out of treatment facilities.
However, in recent years, Dina has made headlines of her own, the most memorable of which was an appearance on "Dr. Phil" last fall in which she appeared out of it, mumbled, and was fidgety. She later denied she had been drinking during the interview. Around the same time, police responded to a domestic violence call at her Merrick, New York, home after she and Lindsay had a dispute. Dina's ex-husband, Michael Lohan, with whom she has had a combative relationship, subsequently released a taped phone conversation he had with Lindsay earlier that night in which the "Liz & Dick" actress claimed her mother had been using cocaine. Lindsay later said she made up the story and her mother was not using drugs.
Lindsay has not yet commented on her mother's arrest. Since she left rehab last month, she appears to be trying to make a fresh start. That has included a deal with Oprah Winfrey for a docuseries about starting over, and several new acting roles, including a guest spot on "Eastbound & Down," for which she has received positive feedback.
But Lindsay's dad and Dina's ex-husband, Michael Lohan, offered his reaction to the arrest in an interview with "omg! Insider."
"At first, shock," Michael said of his response to the news. "But then, you know, you can't keep doing the same thing over and over again and not expect it to catch up to you. It's unfortunate though. The kids don't need this at their point in their life. Lindsay's on a great path and it's hurtful. But it could work out for the better. I mean if she finally goes and gets treatment."
When asked if his ex-wife should go to rehab, Michael was emphatic.
"Of course … It's kind of evident from the past situations she's been in, in the Hamptons and 'Dr. Phil' and so on and so forth that she needs to do something about it," he said. "Maybe this is what's going to turn her life around."

Bill Gates is the richest American for the 20th year in a row and has reclaimed the title of world’s richest person from Mexico’s Carlos Slim with a net worth of $72 billion. Warren Buffett, again number two, was the year’s biggest dollar gainer, having added $12.5 billion to his fortune. Facebook’s hot stock pumped up Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune by $9.6 billion and put him back into the top 20 after missing the top cut last year; Carl Icahn lost his battle to stop Dell from going private but he had a great year and moves back in the top 20 for the first time since 2008. The biggest percentage gainer was Workday’s David Duffield, whose fortune more than tripled to $6.4 billion, and just behind him in terms of percentage jumps was the entrepreneur Elon Musk, now worth $6.7 billion and ranked 61st.

The 400 wealthiest Americans are worth a record $2.02 trillion, roughly equivalent to the GDP of Russia. That is a gain of $300 billion from a year ago, and more than double a decade ago. The average net worth of list members is a staggering $5 billion, $800 million more than a year ago. The minimum net worth needed to make the 400 list was $1.3 billion. The last time it was that high was in 2007 and 2008, just before the financial crisis. Because the bar is so high, 61 American billionaires didn’t make the cut.

There are 20 newcomers to the list. Among the notables are Michael Rubin, whose online sports merchandise retailer Fanatics, recently attracted venture capital investors at a sky-high valuation; Jeff Sutton, who owns a number of the priciest store fronts on Fifth Avenue and Times Square, and  35-year-old Robert Pera, one of just nine under 40, whose wireless networking gear maker Ubiquiti Networks surged after a strong earnings announcement in August. Police officer charged in fatal shooting of unarmed man who had just survived car accident

A North Carolina police officer was charged with voluntary manslaughter on Saturday after police say he fatally shot an unarmed man who had apparently just survived a car crash in Charlotte and was looking for help.

The victim, Jonathan Ferrell, a 24-year-old former Florida A&M University football player, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene early Saturday morning.

The 27-year-old officer, Randall Kerrick, turned himself into police late Saturday. He was released on a $50,000 bond.

"The shooting of Mr. Ferrell was excessive,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement. “Our investigation has shown that Officer Kerrick did not have a lawful right to discharge his weapon during this encounter.”

According to police, Ferrell crashed his vehicle into the woods, climbed out of his car and walked a half-mile to the nearest house. He began “banging on the door viciously,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Chief Rodney Monroe said.

"It was quite possible he was seeking assistance based on his accident," Monroe said.

But the woman who answered the door thought Ferrell was a burglar and called police shortly after 2:30 a.m. to report an attempted break-in.

Kerrick and two other responding officers surrounded Ferrell, who “immediately charged” at the police, Monroe said. One officer tried unsuccessfully to subdue Ferrell with a taser. Kerrick then fired his weapon "several times."

“He immediately charged toward the three officers, one in particular," Monroe said. "That officer in particular fired his weapon several times, striking the individual multiple times."

“It’s with heavy hearts and significant regrets it’s come to this," Monroe added. "Our hearts go out to the Ferrell family and many members of the CMPD family."

According to the Charlotte Observer, police said initially that Kerrick's actions were “appropriate and lawful.” But a subsequent investigation found the officer, who joined the police department in 2011, had "violated the law regarding voluntary manslaughter." Under North Carolina law, voluntary manslaughter is defined as killing without malice using "excessive force" in exercising "imperfect self-defense," the paper said.

Monroe said there was no evidence Ferrell threatened the woman. Alcohol did not appear a factor in the crash, he added.

The two other officers involved in the incident were placed on paid administrative leave.

He's too young for this.

Miley Cyrus Says People Are Missing The Point Of Her Nude "Wrecking Ball" Video (WATCH VIDEO)

Apparently the point of Miley Cyrus' new video was NOT to showcase the naked singer, humping a chain and licking a sledgehammer. In fact, the meaning behind the video is way deeper. Just like Miley.
In an interview with Z100's Elvis Durant, the 20-year-old said that the 44 million plus "Wrecking Ball" viewers were missing what her video was really about: "I think the video is much more. If people get past the point I make, and you actually look at me, you can tell I look more broken than even the song sounds."
Yeah isn't it weird that people are distracted by your naked body? Umm do we need to bring up the sledgehammer lick seen 'round the Internets?
The song which is clearly about a relationship gone wrong, "is a pop ballad that everyone can relate to, everyone has felt that feeling at some point," said Miley. Well who among us can't relate to sauntering about in next to nothing but Doc Martens and riding a wrecking ball like it's a mechanical bull? Just another Wednesday at the X17 office if you ask us!
The twerktastic star said the video, which was directed by controversial photographer Terry Richardson, was meant to show her vulnerable side. Uhh could this video be a very obvious reference to her shaky relationship with "fiance" Liam Hemsworth. All signs point to yes. (We expect an official break up announcement any day now).
We also love that in the interview Miley seems to chastise people who are distracted by the flagrant nudity in the vid.

"If people can take their minds off the obvious and go into their imagination and see what the video really means, it is so vulnerable. If you look at my eyes, I look more sad than actually my voice sounds on the record."

Here's a novel idea: If you didn't want us to be distracted by all the side-boob action -- maybe don't show all the side boob!

We can't tell a lie -- it's hard to look into your eyes Miley when you are SWINGING NAKED ON A WRECKING BALL.
The Disney-girl-gone-bad also said, "It was a lot harder to do the video than it was to record the song. It was much more of an emotional experience."
We get that Miley does truly look sad in this video and that she wants her music to be taken more seriously, but maybe she should think about that before rubbing up against Robin Thicke's junk, diddling herself with a foam hand on stage and making a ridiculous video? All that said, we can't lie -- we think Miley has never sounded better and we can't stop, won't stop listening to this song!

Kris Humphries Auctioning Off Kim Kardashian's Giant Engagement Ring

You can't buy love, but you can buy the material possessions that are left behind when that love disappears. Three months after finalizing their divorce -- and almost two years after their initial split - Kim Kardashian's ex-husband Kris Humphries is auctioning off one of the last remnants of the couple's 72-day marriage: her 20-carat diamond engagement ring.
The NBA player has apparently listed the ring for an Oct. 15 sale at Christie's auction house in New York City. Humphries is not named explicitly as the seller, but according to RumorFix, which first reported the news, the ring in question is identical to the one Kardashian wore during her brief engagement and marriage to the athlete.

A rep for Christie's confirmed to the site that the bauble up for auction is a Lorraine Schwartz creation with a 16.21-carat center diamond and two 1.80-carat side diamonds -- the exact dimensions of Kardashian's ring. The auction house could not disclose the seller's name but said it was "a gentleman."

"It is 100 percent the same ring," a source close to the reality star and new mom, 32, tells Us Weekly. "Kim has been waiting for the day he would auction it. Everyone always asked what Kim did with the ring -- she silently gave it back over a year ago! And Kris waited until the divorce was final to sell it."

The ring is expected to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000 at auction, RumorFix notes -- significantly less than the $2 million it was reported to be worth when Humphries popped the question in May 2011.

"The ring is definitely not worth $2 million, not even half of that," the source tells Us, noting that Kardashian paid for the gem herself.
In any case, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star now has something she values much more -- a daughter, North, with boyfriend Kanye West. She and the rapper welcomed their first child in June.

Last night, Justin Timberlake returned for his fifth appearance as host of “Saturday Night Live,” and performed quite a few skits as well as a few new tracks, but it was his final performance that had everyone buzzing. A few minutes, into “Suit & Tie, backed by the Tennessee Kids band, Justin replaced the line, “sh-t so sick, got a hit and picked up a habit” to “My hits so sick, got rappers acting dramatic.”
Clearly, that was a jab back at Kanye’s recent revelation, “I ain’t f-cking with that Suit & Tie sh-t” in London.
Yeezy will probably be more mad that Jay-Z joined Justin on stage after the subliminal, than the actual line.

KANYE THROWS A JAB AT RAY J ON JIMMY FALLON

 

The College Dropout and Graduation Kanye was in the building last night as he graced the stage of Jimmy Fallon.  While gearing up for his new tour with Kendrick Lamar, he gave us a sneak peek of what to expect by performing the Yeezus track, “Bournd 2,” with a live band, a small choir and  Charlie Wilson, who sang the hell out of the chorus, “I know you’re tired of loving, of loving with nobody to love.”
He also took a page out of Justin Timberlake’s book and changed up the opening line of his song to sneak diss Raj J.

TAMAR BRAXTON CRIES WHEN ASKED ABOUT HER CONFIDENCE AND ABUSIVE PAST

 

 
What happens when you put Tamar Braxton in a room of beautiful, ambitious women for a girl talk about love, marriage, motherhood, careers and how to balance it all? You get a whole lot of laughs, and a few tears.
A few weeks ago, we gave a peek into the  “Girl Talk With Tamar” event which took place on August 16 in New York City, and now we have some footage from the intimate and personal Q&A.  During the two-hour long event, 30 lucky ladies had the chance to chat with Tamar and ask her for advice on numerous topics, and she  was definitely an open book. To get things started, she talked a little about her pregnancy and her attempt to balance motherhood with her career, but things quickly ventured into marriage talk.  There were quite a few women in the room who were in long-term relationships and they wanted to know how they could take their relationships to the next level.
Tamar’s advice was that sometimes men need just a little push, and she shared that she gave her hubby Vince an ultimatum. “I said, ‘Look boo, but you got until December 31^st at 12 o’ clock to propose to me because I feel like you should already know if you want to be with me like that.’”  She was also asked if she would have really walked away if Vince didn’t propose and she said, “Hell yeah!” while explaining that sometimes women have to take a stand or find someone else who will appreciate them for the women they are.
Although most of her responses drew a lot of laughs, the touching and unexpected part of the night happened when Tamar was asked about her past abusive relationship and if there are days that she doesn’t feel so confident. You could literally hear a pin drop in the room, as Tamar went from the high-energy Tamar that we see on TV, to a place that she would love to forget. Through her tears, she explained how she let someone take her confidence away, and that her personality is so much bigger now because she’s hiding the fact that that side still lives there.
